The Workshop
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks are intended to play an increasingly important role in guiding sustainable investment and corporate accountability across the EU. Driven by initiatives like the European Green Deal and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the EU is setting a global benchmark for integrating ESG criteria into financial and regulatory systems. These frameworks are not only intended to promote transparency and long-term value creation but also help to mitigate various climate and social risks across industries. While the UK has taken a separate regulatory path since its withdrawal from the EU, it remains broadly aligned in its ambition by developing parallel ESG disclosure standards and strategies to maintain global competitiveness and attract responsible investment.
Based on ongoing collaboration, the purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers from The University of Manchester (Manchester Organisational Non-Compliance Initiative – MONI); Heidelberg University (Heidelberg Research Group for Organization Studies – HeiGOS); Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam; and Leiden University, to address the following objectives:
- Review the latest developments with ESG frameworks, as well as the organisational and political-economic challenges associated with them.
- Assess the progress made with each group’s (MONI, HeiGOS, Netherlands) ‘joint’ ESG research proposal, including suggested content, join-up, methods, and analysis.
- Agree a plan to write a co-authored journal article that will set out a criminological and social scientific perspective on ESG frameworks.
