Organising grant funding for science

An institutional fied study of Germany's research grant programmes (DFG)

The research project builds on the insights generated in the framework of the DFG funded study THE WAY WE ASK FOR MONEY. While the previous study focuses on the normative and performative dimension of grant writing as social practice, ORGANISING GRANT FUNDING looks into the organisational story behind the institutionalisation of grant writing. By drawing on Fligstein and McAdam s theory of fields, the research project aims at understanding the intraorganisational, interorganisational and institutional factors that influence the way grant writing has been implemented by grant makers and applicants. In combining micro, meso and macro sociological perspectives, we propose a comprehensive explanatory framework for the institutionalization of grant writing as social practice and policy instrument.
