Conference: The Rule of Law in the Enforcement of EU law: Shortcomings and future standards

In the Jean Monnet Network on the Enforcement of EU Law (EULEN), academics from the Universiteit Utrecht, Université du inside the Universiteit Utrecht, Université du Luxembourg, Universidad de Castilla – La Mancha, Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi, Uniwersytet Warszawski, Universidad de la Iglesia de Deusto Entidad Religiosa, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, King’s College London and the University of Heidelberg are dedicated to the different models of implementation of EU law in competition and banking law, financial protection issues or migration policy from an analytical, legitimation and especially cross-sectoral perspective.

Conference:

The two-day conference to be held in Heidelberg under the title "The Rule of Law in EU Law Enforcement: Shortcomings and future standards" will give members of the EULEN network as well as researchers outside the network from different disciplines the opportunity to take stock of the requirements and challenges that the three major developments in enforcement entail. Based on these findings and conclusions, the conference will address the need for a common normative framework and discuss how the rule of law could be rethought or adjusted to justify, guide, and limit the enforcement of EU law.

Program:

Day 1:
Papers from sectoral work packages will be presented in order to specify the challenges; especially where judicial accountability is perfunctory or levels of human rights protection have been criticized. Speakers will be asked to identify solutions or best practices developed in their sector of expertise. The participants will discuss proposed solutions with respect to their adequacy and potential for other sectors. In addition to members of the network academics hailing from other disciplines (political science, economics, and social science) will be invited to share their views on potential problems and solutions.

Day 2:
On the second day participants will be invited to elaborate on common constitutional benchmarks for the question of the promotion of the rule of law in the field of enforcement in the EU.
